The Different Types of Electric Vehicles

2024 Audi Electric

The electric vehicle revolution is in full swing, and many Yonkers and New Rochelle drivers are ditching their gasoline-powered vehicles in exchange for hybrids and EVs, and it’s easy to see why. They require less maintenance, emit fewer to zero emissions, and offer excellent savings from the gas pumps. The most commonly known electric vehicle type is battery-powered EVs, but there are several different types of EVs. How many types of electric vehicles are there? Read on to learn about the different types of electric vehicles to find out which one suits you best within our inventory at Pepe Auto Group!

How Many Types of Electric Vehicles Are There?

So, how many types of electric vehicles are there? Currently, there are only four types of electric vehicles, which include hybrid-electric, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), battery-powered hybrids (BEVs), and fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs):

  • Hybrid Electric Vehicles: Hybrid electric vehicles consist of a traditional internal-combustion engine and an electric motor. Unlike plug-in hybrids, which can receive electricity via charging stations, hybrid electric vehicles rely on charging their battery by using regenerative braking. Regenerative braking uses the kinetic energy from the braking and converts it into electric power.
  • Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles:Just like traditional hybrids, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) come with an internal combustion engine, a battery, and an electric motor. The main difference is that the battery gets its power from an external source like a charging station, rather than regenerative braking.
  • Battery Electric Vehicles: Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are the poster child for EVs and run solely on electric power. BEVs emit zero emissions and have much larger electric driving ranges than hybrid vehicles. If you’re considering a BEV, you’ll want to invest in a home charging station so you’ll never run out of battery.
  • Hydrogen Electric Vehicles (Fuel Cell): The least known type of EV are hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), which are powered by hydrogen. Coming across an FCEV in Stamford is an uncommon occurrence, as there is a major lack of hydrogen-fuel infrastructure in the United States. Though more companies are making strides to build hydrogen stations in New York, so we can expect to see more FCEVs on the roads in the future.
