What are My Electric Car Charging Options?

There are three primary ways to charge an electric car: Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 charging. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages.

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): A Level 1 charge uses the ounded (three-prong) 110V/120V charging outlet at your home, so it’s the least expensive option. However, it’s also the slowest by far – reaching a full charge in no less than 24 hours.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Upgrade to a professionally-installed Level 2 charger to speed up your charging times significantly. An at-home charger can bring your battery from 0 to 80% in just 40 minutes!
  3. Public Charging: Public charging stations are often found in areas like malls, hotels, and apartment complexes. These charging stations are often Level 2, but many are DC Fast Charging stations – or Level 3. A Level 3 charger can charge your battery fully in an hour or less for maximum convenience on the go.

Typical Domestic Charging Electric Car Charging Time

Time is precious for Stamford drivers, so how long can you expect to wait for your vehicle to charge? Here are estimates for the typical electric car charging time:

  • Level 1 EV charging takes at least a day to charge a car fully.
  • Level 2 EV charging takes only hours to fully charge an electric car.
  • Level 3 EV charging can fully recharge most EVs in an hour or less, or add significant range in just ten minutes.

What if you have a hybrid model? Plug-in hybrid charging is much faster, and you can usually charge your battery fully in 1 to 4 hours. That’s because hybrid models have a smaller battery than a fully electric model, as well as a gas-powered engine as backup.
