Every year, the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety determines how safe the cars automakers make are on roads around the United States. As a result, they often will update and change their safety standards, ensuring that vehicles can meet their measurements and prove that they’re ideal for you and your family.

To that end, with the latest IIHS standards being stricter, Audi has managed to earn seven 2023 Top Safety Awards, with five models gaining the highest honor of TOP SAFETY PICK+. Yet which Audi cars have earned this honor and does it include any of Audi’s current EV lineup? Pepe Auto Group has been a new Audi dealer in New York State for many years. Find out why Audi managed to secure this win and what it means going forward.

What Are The IIHS Award Standards?

As we indicated above, the IIHS is focused on ensuring all of the vehicles coming through the American market are safe for interested buyers. Whether they’re domestically produced or imported, making sure they meet safety standards is essential to their ratings and recommendations. To summarize how each of these awards function:

  • TOP SAFETY PICK: In order to win this IIHS award, it’s required you receive an Acceptable or Good rating in the “Updated Side Test,” while the front crash prevention system must earn an Advanced or Superior rating in the daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluation.
  • TOP SAFETY PICK+: The IIHS requires that you have a Good rating in their updated side impact test, alongside Advanced or Superior ratings on both the daytime and nighttime pedestrian evaluations.

So now that we know what the IIHS requires, let’s review how this German import has fared with its safety requirements.

Which Audi Cars Won The IIHS Safety Awards?

In February 2023, The IIHS announced a new side crash test that requires 82% more energy than the former one. This comes alongside a new nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention test. So which Audi models have met this stricter standard? This year the following Audi cars have met this requirement:

For The 2023 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ Awards:

  • 2023 Audi Q4 e-tron.
  • 2023 Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron.
  • 2024 Audi Q8 e-tron.
  • 2024 Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron.
  • 2023 Audi Q8.

For The 2023 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK Awards:

  • 2023 Audi Q5.
  • 2023 Audi Q5 Sportback.

All of Audi’s fully-electric SUVs won the TOP SAFETY PICK+, while the new 2023 Audi Q8 e-tron models have managed to also reach this awards plateau. This is a great accomplishment for the carmaker and the people who designed this vehicle. The President of Audi of America, Daniel Weissland, was very enthusiastic about the award wins:

“Customer safety is a top priority at Audi,” Weissland said. “We are proud to see Audi’s efforts in safety enhancing technology continue to earn the accolades of independent industry organizations, with our engineers constantly striving to develop vehicles that achieve ever more challenging safety benchmarks.”
